Which format should you pick?

WebP is the safe default: smaller than JPG and PNG, keeps transparency, and every current browser reads it. JPG is right for photographs going somewhere old or fussy. PNG when you need every pixel exact — screenshots, line art, anything you will edit again. AVIF is the smallest, but support is still catching up, so it is a poor choice for an email attachment.

Converting to JPG flattens transparency onto white, because JPG cannot store it. Everything else here keeps it.

Questions

Which format should I choose?
WebP is the safe default: smaller than JPG and PNG, keeps transparency, and every current browser reads it. Pick JPG for photographs going somewhere old or fussy, PNG when every pixel must be exact, and AVIF when size matters more than compatibility.
What happens to transparency?
PNG, WebP and AVIF all keep it. JPG cannot store transparency at all, so those pixels are flattened onto white — otherwise they would come back black, which is the usual unpleasant surprise when converting a cut-out to JPG.
Can I convert HEIC photos here?
Yes, HEIC goes in like any other format. If JPG is all you need, HEIC to JPG is the same job with the answer already filled in.
Does converting lose quality?
Converting to PNG does not — it is lossless. JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy, so re-encoding costs a little quality each time. Converting a JPG to PNG will not restore what the JPG already discarded; it only stops further loss.
